The Late Late Show was back to normal this week after the epic Toy Show special, and host Patrick Kielty was joined by none other than Oscar winner Brendan Fraser to discuss his latest film, Rental Family.
The iconic actor won his Academy Award for his role in the harrowing The Whale, and was nominated alongside Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin and Paul Mescal for Aftersun.
When chatting about his Oscar win on the show, he gave the two Irishmen a shoutout, sharing how he had no idea it was going to be his name called out as the winner on the night.
When Patick asked him what does it mean to win an Oscar, the 57-year-old shared: ‘I want to be worthy of it. I have many, many people to still thank who brought me that far.
‘There were some incredibly talented guys alongside me in that category, Paul [Mescal] and Colin [Farrell], Ireland’s own. We didn’t know which way it would go when the envelope was opened, and I was probably more astonished than anyone else to hear my name called.
‘I’m the lucky guy who got to thank everyone from the world’s biggest stage for that.’
Talk soon turned to the make-up and prosthetics work that went into The Whale, as Fraser plays English teacher Charlie who is extremely obese and housebound as a result.
Patrick was astonished by the transformation, commenting on how he had to spend three hours getting his Grinch makeup done for the Toy Show last week, whereas Brendan had to do this for 30-days while shooting the film.
Fraser explained as an image of him in character appeared on screen: ‘Well, it was clearly a lot of transformational makeup. That’s Charlie, as you can see, he’s a large man. He is bound to the couch in his home, his tiny apartment.
‘And when we meet him, it’s the last days of his time on earth, and he knows it. But to complete his own journey, he wants to reconnect with his daughter, if that is possible.
‘But to create Charlie, it required elaborate costuming, about four or five hours of prosthetic makeup that was 3D printed by Adrien Morot, who won an Oscar for this look that year.’
Fans were thrilled to hear Brendan chat to Patrick on the Late Late Show, with one person commenting: ‘Brendan is one of the most humble actors out there.’
Another shared: ‘Oh what an amazing actor to come to the late late show. Most deserving comeback in Hollywood. Good guy Brendan ❤️’
