MACAULAY CULKIN TEASES 'SPOOKY' ROLE ON 'FALLOUT' SEASON 2 AND SPILLS 'HOME ALONE' SECRETS
Macaulay Culkin has an idea for a new Home Alone movie he’s been sharing as he tours with the 1990 Christmas comedy in theatres around the U.S.
During his a recent Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin show, Culkin, now 45, floated a storyline that would centre on Kevin McCallister’s son locking his father out of the house.
“I kind of had this idea,” the father of two said, per Variety . “I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. (Kevin’s son) won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.”
In his Home Alone threequel, “the house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship” and Kevin has to “get let back into his son’s heart’ kind of deal. That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it.”
Culkin’s plans for a new Home Alone entry might never happen, but while he waits for his phone to ring, the Golden Globe nominee is set to join the cast of Amazon’s Fallout as it returns for its second season.
Co-created and executive produced by Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, the post-apocalyptic series is based on the popular video game franchise and centres on Lucy ( Yellowjackets’ Ella Purnell) and the Ghoul (Walton Goggins), two wayward souls in search of their families in a violent post-nuclear wasteland.
Culkin plays an undisclosed character in Season 2 that’s only been described so far as a “crazy genius-type” who will presumably meet up with Lucy and the Ghoul as they make their way to the city of New Vegas, which was the setting for the 2010 game Fallout: New Vegas .
He’ll be joined by other newcomers Kumail Nanjiani and Justin Theroux (playing New Vegas ruler Robert House).
“I hope I bring my best, that’s for sure,” Culkin says of signing on for the series.
On a recent weekday afternoon video call from Los Angeles, Culkin teased more about what’s in store when Fallout returns this week and helped us finally figure out what the parents in Home Alone did for a living.
Macaulay, we don’t know much about Season 2 of Fallout. What does your character bring to this world?
He’s kind of a spooky character. It’s one of those things where I can’t give away too much when it comes to this kind of thing. But I’m a fan of the show, and it’s one of those things where their left-of-centre sense of humour and the gore and weirdness kind of speaks to me.
No one has seen any of the episodes. If you could compare Season 2 of Fallout to a theme park ride, what theme park ride would it be?
How about the Haunted Mansion. It’s got plenty of ghouls in it and stuff, but you also have to be along for the ride. It’s slow and weird and it’s multi-faceted. You have to kind of walk down, sit down on it — it’s the whole works. So I would pick that.
What was it about this world that made you say, ‘I want to do this?’
I’m a fan of a show. My lady (Brenda Song) and I we don’t have a lot of time to watch things, but this is one of those shows that we watched top to bottom … I really enjoyed it, and it was one of those things where I said, ‘Oh yeah, it would be great if I was on that’ and then went to sleep. Then about a month or two later, I got a phone call asking if I wanted to be on it and I was like, ‘F*** yeah, let’s go. Let me check my watch, it’s go-o’clock.’ There I am.
Are you a big gamer?
I used to be. Now that I’m a father I have a little less time for that. I’m a little behind.
Was there one actor on the show you were hoping you’d get to appear with?
Walton Goggins and I go back. I played his son on The Righteous Gemstones . That was kind of fun. I was looking forward to working with him again.
I was always curious what Kevin’s parents did for a living in Home Alone. Do you know?
I think his father was a corporate lawyer, that’s how they were able to afford such nice things and live in a nice neighbourhood. His mother was an interior decorator, that’s why the house was so nice.
Which is better — Home Alone 1 or 2?
I like the second one because I got paid more.
Which Wet Bandit got the most abuse — Harry or Marv?
The answer to that is … yes.
